Sinks for plant surplus carbon explain several ecological phenomena

چکیده
Abstract Plants engage in many processes and relationships that appear to be wasteful of the high-energy compounds they produce through carbon fixation photosynthesis. For example, living trees keep leafless tree stumps alive ( i.e. respiring) support shaded understory by sharing carbohydrates root grafts or mycorrhizal fungal networks. exude a diverse array organic from their roots leaves, which abundant rhizosphere phyllosphere microbiomes. Some plants release substantial amounts sugar via extra-floral nectaries, enrich throughfall alter lichen communities beneath canopy. Large photosynthetically fixed are transferred associates such as fungi N-fixing micro-organisms. also respire C an alternative pathway does not generate ATP. Rates each these highest when growing under mild-to-moderate deficiencies nutrients water. During this stage deficiency, aboveground plant growth is curtailed more than photosynthesis, causing leaves surplus carbohydrates. Each above phenomena provide sink for carbohydrates, thereby preventing feedback inhibition perpetuating influx C. Because incur little cost source plant, need benefit beyond removal

Can Mathematics Explain Physical Phenomena?
Batterman ([2010]) raises a number of concerns for the inferential conception of the applicability of mathematics advocated by Bueno and Colyvan ([2011]). Here, we distinguish the various concerns, and indicate how they can be assuaged by paying attention to the nature of the mappings involved and emphasizing the significance of interpretation in this context. We also indicate how this concepti...
متن کاملTerritorial Rights and Carbon Sinks
Scholars concerned with abuses of the "resource privilege" by the governments of developing states sometimes call for national sovereignty over the natural resources that lie within its borders. While such claims may resist a key driver of the "resource curse" when applied to mineral resources in the ground, and are often recognized as among a people's territorial rights, their implications dif...
متن کاملSpatial autocorrelation of ecological phenomena.
Ecological variables often fluctuate synchronously over wide geographical areas, a phenomenon known as spatial autocorrelation or spatial synchrony. Development of statistical approaches designed to test for spatial autocorrelation combined with the increasing accessibility of long-term, large-scale ecological datasets are now making it possible to document the patterns and understand the cause...
متن کاملTransport Phenomena in Two-Phase Micro-Channel Heat Sinks
The design and reliable operation of a two-phase micro-channel heat sink require a fundamental understanding of the complex transport phenomena associated with convective boiling in small, parallel coolant passages. This understanding is the primary goal of this paper. This goal is realized by exploring the following aspects of boiling in microchannels: hydrodynamic instability, two-phase flow ...
